Chilly but warming

Quick trip to the boat yesterday. Very cold when we got there. Water struggled as there was some probably frozen in water pump. I took her of shoreline and ran the engine for a couple of hours. Lots of white smoke to begin with but she had not been run for ages so it was acceptable, soon running clear.

The marina seems quieter than of late with more spaces at the back of the marina. At Kings Bromley you have to negotiate a narrow channel to get to the back of the marina, not difficult but narrow. i prefer the mooring as we get very little troublesome wind when manoeuvring compared to other places we have been.

She soon warmed up and all was fine so I decided to nip out and take a few pictures, looking for a good sunset shot but there was no real "shot" available. However, here are a few pictures of what was actually a beautiful day, shame my photos did not do it justice:-

Whilst chilly, the thaw had set in overnight. I expect the ice will be gone as temperatures rise. We pass the T and M a few times as we drive home and it looked better towards Burton.

That's it for another couple of weeks or so. I might go Saturday next week with youngest one for the night as I need to build some shelving and remove some mirrors which have been glued to the bedroom woodwork. The shelving is simple stuff for now, just flip up cup holders near our bed so we can enjoy our morning drink and still be able to put it down. Above the bed I am going to place some storage shelves but have not designed this as yet.

PS I have voted and I chose Andrew Tidy as my first preference with only three other "notable" other preferences as I found most did not match up to my expectations. One even recommended "harrassing" management into improving availability. Harrassment is no replacement for constructive intelligent dialogue. Good luck Andrew, and the three others - Ann Farrell, Alan Fincher and David Mayall.

Whatever the Weather

It seems the haul between new year occuring and easter is having an impact. I am exhausted. I had hoped to make more use of NB Lola this winter but I suppose we have not done too badly. the problems lie with my older daughters rowing and social life, combined with weekend trips to plays as part of her english studies. Younger one is still doing the parties and we have friends and relatives to visit. I think that this actually makes our boating weekends more special as I look forward to them that much more. At work all we now experience are the odd resignation but many more noticeable retirements, an effect of the current no external recruitment situation.

So, this weekend we will go to the boat, probably only one night but that is enough to get a quick fix. One issue I do have is taking enough pictures. I must make more use of my camera and tripod. No real jobs to be done (unless I have a wee surprise when I turn up that is!) so it will be get the fire going re set the water system and chill.

Just looked for some pictures to post but so many are over-exposed I would rather wait until I take some better shots. Although, there should one or two decent ones somewhere?

I am not letting go!

Overnighter

Popped to the boat with my 9 years old daughter for the night.

All was well except for the smoke/CO detector. Could not get it to work so I had a trip out to Lichfield. Found separate Co and Smoke alarms in Wilkinsons and decided they were what I wanted. Both good quality items so gave me more confidence. Had them both fitted in ten min in the correct place according to the guidance. The fire was soon on and roaring, I do like the Morso squirrel. I also turned on the fan heater and the oil radiator but I did not bother with the engine as I could boil what hot water we needed, the calorifier is fed from the engine only.

Very windy night but so enjoyable with just two people, much less crowded.

Will probably do the same next weekend and for the foreseeable future.

Not a lot

Work is getting in the way of boating at present. I am grateful to be working so no complaints here.
I will be spending a night on the boat this weekend with Sarah. Been watching NB Waiouru being brought back to life, they are certainly getting there, good luck guys. Thankfully my Asthma is improving and i can probably get back on the bike soon. My knee is improving, a boating accident in August at the end of our Cheshire ring expedition - i put my foot on the bank and it gave way slightly resulting in a meniscus problem. The meniscus is cartilage acting as a kind of knee shock absorber. It was a bugger at first but is slowly mending, not helped by me playing indoor cricket last week!.

I am missing the gongoozlers (Gorgonzola's in the spell checker!) and the hire boaters and the boat owners so a trip is on the cards if the weather improves.

So here is to the weekend and a little bribery for my 9 year old!

2012 plans

Ok, I have now developed my plans a bit further

Between now and April we will have the odd weekend at the boat in between Johannas GCSE's. interestingly her school do them in a year at a time. For example, history and about 4 other subjects will be studied in year 10 and the exams at the end of the year, with controlled assessments throughout. Year 11 will be French and the others, making about 11 GCSE's, she already has ICT in the bag when she was 13, a bright girl with her school report showing straight A's across the board.

But back to the boat. I may go for a few days between April and now. If Feb half term is ok and Jo is not stressing about school work, we might get a mid week break in.

April is a flight to Spain to see my sister in her Finka in Estepona.

May is possibly a work trip to the US so we might get the odd weekend overnighter.

June, hopefully the half term week we can enjoy on the boat. Late June is an alternative to the May trip to the US (Iowa and possibly Minnesota, so not exciting in the least). Sadly, I hate flying.

July. We were going to boat to near Eton for the Olympic rowing as we have tickets but have decided to cash in some of my priority reward points and drive to a hotel near to eton.

August will be 2 weeks off on the boat to wherever and back.

September, weekending again with October possibly being a week at half term taking her to a new winter mooring although we are not sure about this yet. the issue is that Kings Bromley is inconvenient with Jo studying and all so i was thinking about 6 months in Sawley and 6 months Kings Bromley or elsewhere. the difficulty is we like Kings Bromley alot, it is very convenient for so many routes.

I am very keen on having a new build when I do retire so Lola will be sold, depsite all the work we have had done to her. Not expecting much of a return but I reckon about 30k would be a welcome sum. Of course I could have her taken out and tidied up/re-designed and this is an option.

A night on the boat

Went to NB Lola yesterday. All seemed fine, batteries were fully charged but we took our feed from the shoreline anyway.

No issues on board and the night was ok, if not a little unsettled. Was a bit colde as we did not keep the stove in. so had to do with the oil filled rad and a hot air heater.

Jobs for the new year now include a new water tank isolation valve, the current one took a bit of WD40 and 3 in 1. Might be ok on next visit so we will see. What I did see was a poor paint job where the water tank was, either side it was a bit rusty, not too bad though.

The paintwork is holding up ok and the roof paint job from earlier in the year is fine so far, quite impressed with it really.

So I part winterised, the water tank was half full and I ran the pump with the valve closed so most water has drained out, just the calorifier to worry about but it survived last year so heres hoping.

Not sure about extended plans for next year as we are off to Spain during Easter. Might have a week during may half term I think. I fancy a trip to Birmingham and back, or as close to. Not being in Birmingham is not an issue as it is really about cruising in my opinion. The alternative could be Great Haywood, Tixall wide and beyond, that sound like a better bet to me.

No go till new year

Well its no boaty till new year unless we have a stay over just before Christmas, a possibility if the weather stays fair. What a lovely change from last year. Lola was stuck in the water with the engine removed, waiting the new one to be fitted. I am pleased for all that the ice has yet to take a grip.

Sarah had her 9th birthday party yesterday, an afternoon on the ice rink in Nottingham. She exclaimed that it was her best birthday ever. I did not take pictures because of the number of bags n bits I was already being asked to look after.

So next big event is Christmas day. Hopefully a boaty set of pictures before that if we do get to the boat.

Will I ever learn?

Off to the boat this morning. It takes about 45 mins to get to the Marina. Why do I mention this read on later.

The visit was to check her over and to also warm her through and check the part winterising. Fire was lit and I thought - lets just stay over with daughter number 2, this is soooo nice. Sarah put the tv on and I checked bilges and suchlike. Kindle was brought with me so I read my book to the end, was just a few pages to go. We then trialled the oil heater with the intention of putting it on a timer but I decided to leave it a while as last year we suffered no ill effects even though winterising was not done. However, we will go to the boat again later this month so I can decide then. Marina was looking pretty full, as usual.

So we got ready to leave, making sure that the fire was dying down and all else was ok.

Off we set homeward bound with the promise of some fried chicken for Sarah as a treat. Gets nearly home and turn into the chicken shop whence I cannot find my wallet, no recollection of taking it from the boat - bum must have left it aboard. Back we went. No wallet. Where is it? Checked around again, still no trace. OK last place could be in the car, checked the back seats, there it was on the floor, doh!

So back home again we decided to forgo chicken licken and have a sandwich instead.

Because Johanna has Newark rowing competition tomorrow we could not stay on Lola so it will have to be week after next I reckon or await the new year. I am looking forward to being able to stay over during crimbo but, alas, that may take a while given youngest is only 8.

A short trip and late post

Well, we have been a tad busy this last week and I missed the opportunity to reflect upon our, probably, last trip out of the year.

We wandered out last Monday, as mentioned in previous posts. No right turn because Fradley was part closed with lock repairs. So left turn Clyde and towards toilet town (Armitage). On board were John and a couple of his friends. I had promised John a day on the "barge" as he kept jokingly called it, but he now accepts narrowboat, in my company anyway. A tad cold so on went the gloves and we were soon at Handsacre with not a soul moving, save ourselves. Whilst cold it was otherwise enjoyable with the fire on for thiose sitting inside. Bacon sandwiches were soon made up and these kept us "in" for the time being.

The original plan in my head was to go past Rugeley and turn about (wind) at the winding point just past the trent aqueduct. however, progress was not as expected because there were so many moored boats, meaning a tickeover when nearing and passing them. I always keep the boat to tick over until i am well past the moored boat, purely to help them keep their pins in by not accelerating to early.

In the end we winded just before Rugeley and headed back through the narrows to moor up at the Plum Pudding restaurant. We enjoyed some nice Italian fayre which was well cooked and despite Johns dry humour, the waitress was very nice and friendly. Lunch took us until 2.20 pm meaning we had to get on before it started to get dark.

We got back into Kings Bromley at 3.30 pm, after an enjoyable, easy day.

Richard Sherratt had carried out an engine service for us and it was noticeable - a good job. Richard has many talents and we may be providing him with some work next year. He is well known at Kings Bromley and trades as RJS Marine - 07779 242055. I do like to recommend people who provide good service at an affordable price. I will be doing my own servicing soon but with a full time job, home and family time is at a premium.

I shall be going to Lola regularly over the winter as even though we will not be taking her out I still enjoy being there. Last year the engine replacement scuppered these plans so this year I will be there, just need John to find me some more wood!

Where did the weather go?

Seems the weather is turning this week. Just as well my outing wiv da boyz is tomorrow.

I am taking out 5 guys who have retired early late or just do not know when to give it up!

One of these chaps is a nice guy called John who lives in the midlands in a lovely property with an indecent amount of land. However, this land yields a plentiful supply of Ash, Oak, irch etc. So I gain by having enough wood to last all year round.

We went brash clearing - this is the stuff that falls from trees in the main, yesterday and built three bongires for it. Mine was a total didaster, put down to having the wettest wood supply - my excuse anyways.

One major problem, my firend John, insists on calling the narrowboat a barge. Not sure if this is in jest or ignorance, although one yesterday did offer the term long boat as an alternative. I can see I will have my work cut out tomorrow.

Bit of boaty stuff

Popped up to her today to pull out the engine service book ready for its service next week. Also took off some bit n pieces we will not need till next season.

I really do need to get some painting done but have decided to hold this up for when i take her out to check prop etc.

All was well, I could have easily on her, wish we had overnighted there now. Never mind.

I have decided to put the oilf filled radiator to good use and she will have a timer added next week. Just to keep the frost at bay although the boat fared very well lkast year, just a popped tap because I forgot to drain the water. I do hope our live aboard friends have an easier winter than last.

Too early to be ready fur winter yet. Am on the boat saturday to do some odds n ends. Mainly touching up paintwork if the weather will permit. I am going out on the 14th but it will be a left turn as Shadehouse will be closed. I will have some virgin boaters with so that should be fun. Probably pop towards Rugeley for Lunch and back again, lets hope the rain (dare not say the ice word!) keeps at bay.

The service should be completed in the next few days, another job done. After the day out with friends I shall part winterise, not much to this for me, mainly draining the water system and reducing whats in the calorifier to allow for expansion. Having said that, we often spend the weekend onboard and just stay where we are so we will de-winterise as needed.

What I did want to mention was the success of our enzyme based toilet stuff. Its working a treat, no smells at all which would not be the case if we still used Blue. lets hope them little enzymes break down all them larger objects!

Early Return

We returned back to Kings Bromley a little earlier than planned because of the weather forecast.

The rain tomorrow would have spoilt an otherwise excellent break.

We left Alvecote at about 9am and returned to Kings Bromley at 5pm, no rushing, just a steady pace.

The only irritating thing was the noise from under the boat(some have been known to say the noise from above the engine!). I have determined it was because of low water levels but as the engine is being serviced next week, I am sure any other potential will be considered (the engineer will be pre-advised). I guessed low water levels because it is intermittent and there have been no changes to the boat and it first occurred when we hit low water, which seems pretty much the norm at present. I did check the usual suspects, the weed hatch, prop and rudder as well as generally listening to the engine. NB Chance had reported similar noises as we travelled behind them so I reckon my detecting is correct. Not much hope for improvement if BW are on the case then! And no, it is not just about how much falls from the sky, it is also about water conservation and management which BW seem particularly inept at dealing with, mind you Severn Trent Water has a similar, but published track record.

I saw No Direction in Kings Bromley today, their blog mentions the issues at Atherstone. The chap I spoke to laid the blame clearly at inadequate decision making by BW engineers. The problem at Atherstone has been known about for years, tree roots penetrating the culvert drain pipes. when the contractors cleared the culverts they merely moved the silt into the culvert drains because the side pounds were not properly cleared, just half cleared, hence the silt movement. That aside I actually found the atherstone flight quite enjoyable.

Streethay was its usual busy self. a fellow boater whom I chatted with at the top of Atherstone whilst we waited for the pound to fill mentioned he was moving his boat to Streethay from Barby. He mentioned that there were only now about 10 boaters left at Barby. I do hope its gets sorted. The new marina just south of Streethay is coming on well, but there seemed no action there today. It is called Kings Orchard.

The return to King's Bromley was very enjoyable with lovely weather and excellent scenery (excusing the rail line). The last leg to Fradley, in my opinion, is the nicest, just the last half mile, it is so natural.

Anyhow, a lovely trip out, providing many future options for next year, not least a trip to Wolverhampton, missing Birmingham. A trip to Birmingham and many other options. Kings Bromley is turning into a winner for me - so far.

Have you seen one of these? We were asked by a fellow boater to let a few more know about it and how we use it.

We use it for peace of mind (occasionally) when we moor in a place we are not sure of. Between £18 and £25, depending on where you shop. We just loop through the armco/ mooring ring and return the cable through our mid section door, locking it inside the boat. We have not used it often but its nice to have around.

So, our next boaty stuff will be Jo to rowing training tomorrow and the narrowboat in maybe a couple of weeks or so, perhaps sooner!

Atherstone Top Lock

Nice wee drinkie was had with Doug and James and we decided to class the meet up as a banter. Strange how we have similar views on many boaty things!

What a beautiful morning sky

Ok so we left with Chance in front of us and headed for the Atherstone Locks.

Quite a windy day and the water levels were also quite low.

We were passing a boat going round a bend so I slowed down, me being the kind considerate type, the other boat passed and waved and carried on at full speed!

Now my dander is up about this. How many boaters are ignorant to issues re water displacement? So, around we went, hit the cavitation areas and steering was bolloxed, straight toward the bank we headed. Because I had slowed down I managed to make reasonable stop so we could push off the bank.

A pleading: Please, please remember/learn to slow down past your fellow boater. If you must act like an ignorant bloater (hehe), just keep away from where I travel!

We climbed the Atherstone Locks, with no real delay or issues to present. In fact it was a very nice day as the sun escaped from the cloud/haze.

Once at the top I noticed the fish and chip sign I decided to plan an early turn around so we could enjoy them. We turned just after Bridge 34 and meandered back to the top lock 48 hour moorings. A quick walk into Atherstone found quite an agreeable town centre. I am tempted to enjoy a real ale but my self imposed diet and drink fast may cause some issues until I get to the bar!

Only a few phone calls from work, much better than in the past and I was worried that my email was down the pinging which meant “you’ve got mail master” was so rare.

Chance passed us heading the other way, a wave and pleasantries and off they went. Enjoy your adventures guys - such nice people we meet, except for speed merchants that is!.

Kath thought the varnishing was becoming a job for another day because the tin i provided had thoroughly separated and was xx years old too. Ha ha, she was trumped. I found another tin and we have now varnished all window bottoms for the winter. Excellent!

It is now fast becoming fish (and ale) and chip time.

We popped to the pub next to the chippy for a quick pint 9just one and I/we are on holiday!).

Chippy was fine but never ask for large chips, there was far, far too many.

Over night the mooring was fine except when we took Lola out for her last wee. it appears a dog living in the adjoining house got wind and this dog created such a racket that the neighbours were shouting across fences at the owner – oh dear. Kath beat a hasty retreat having not been exposed as part culprit.

We awoke in good time to hit the locks at Atherstone at 9am. into the lock we went closed the gates , opened the paddles and, and, the gates were still locked which was odd because we both swore a boat had passed us heading for the locks. Kath duly called the 01827 252000 no for the regional centre. We then found our that the pound between 5 and 6 had emptied because the paddle was not shut by the last boat passing through. So we waited about an hour and 20 mins stuck in the lock, just as well it was a lovely day I say.

BW did an fine job and we went down. As we did so a BW workperson commented upon the waste of money BW spend (yet again) on paying for contractors when a permanent staffing of capable drainage guys would save them pounds year in year out.

How remiss of me! - We are out!

Ok,

Apologies, we left Kings Bromley yesterday at 10 am, heading to the Ashby (ish). Reasonable start and we joined the madding crowd (far from - get it?) at Shade House. Just a couple of boats in front of us, one of which was, wait for it,

Go for It!

Erm, yes it was NB Go For It, heading for Fradley so only a couple of locks for them, nice to meet you guys!

So, we passed down Fradley to the Mucky Duck (The Swan), turned right after finding that the coal and diesel boat had no coal. Onto the Coventry we ventured. I do like the Coventry, not too built up and quite relaxing, apart from Glascote Locks, for some reason me and them just do not get on, except for meeting Chance! We have been trying to find quality time with these guys for ages as I enjoy their blog and quite like the coach paintwork too.

So Hello To Doug and James whom we are now moored next to.

This could be a boozy night, having already quaffed a botttle with them, and that was just after 4pm, lovely!

Tea time soon so more photos to be added tomorrow, including that new marina just down from Fradley.

Odds n sods, bits n bobs

Went to the allotment this morning to plant the shallots and more garlic. Was going to cut more wood but decided to leave it as we have plenty for next week. Will need to buy some coal but thats not a problem.

Oldest daughter Johanna is at the Nottingham Heads , their home race route down the Trent. Dropped her off at 9.20 am and it was getting busy with registrations and what not, lots of rules in rowing.

Not many boats moored at county hall, couple of narrowboats, a wide beam and some ice cream tubs (cruisers).

Lovely day for rowing, the water looked perfect. I guess when we arrive at the boat next week it will be much cooler and some prospects for snow if you would believe it!. Just checked temp for Thursday night and it is currently forecasting 2c brrrrr.

Still planning to go down the coventry and back before the lock works start at Fradley.

Was at Nottingham Beer Festival Friday last, ticket only this time as it was sold out and much better than last year, not as full. Superb variety of beers and food. I lasted from 5pm till 9.30 pm when tiredness set in and a free lift was offered.

Hopefully next blog will ba accompanied by boaty pictures.

Getting ready for the next outing

Fed up with the car resembling the Hill Billy's van so I went to the boat yesterday to take clothing and doggy stuff and logs which seem to be the most space taking stuff. It get me every time. Soon as I am on board I want to stay on board, addictive or what!

Marina seemed quite full as our winter moorers join us. Nice to see it so popular, I just hope they invest in some more services. I would like to see a larger range of goods at affordable prices (wouldn't we all!). But it is easy to do and such a captive audience too.

I now have a plentiful supply of wood thanks to a kindly person with too many trees, and, with my new sawhorse and chainsaw (training undergone) I am making the best of whats available. It will be interesting to see how different woods burn. I may keep a record if I can be bothered. I would so love a diesel heater but cannot see how it will work with our layout unless I fit the rads above the gunwhale and as hot air rises I question the impact.

So, no boaty this weekend or next but holiday at half term looks promising so long as it is not torrential rain (famous last words) as my locking crew do not like it too wet.

Latest idea is to go to the Ashby and back, just 30 or so locks in total, lets see.

the new green enzyme stuff seems to be working. We added it just after our last trip and having primed it shall we say. No smell, but the shower seemed to have an interesting growth. Time for some weakened bleach next time, as we just cleaned it up this visit.

The next trip out, or in?

So, the weather turns in the next couple of days and here I was hoping to take Lola the boat out next weekend, I somehow think not, we may likely just stay over for the night which allows us to move some clothes on board ready for the late October half term holiday. We were going to do the Black Country Ring but I think it is too much so I reckon it will be down the Coventry Canal and some way up the Ashby, fewer locks which will please the girls and if the weather is poo we can shorten the holiday. In any case I have things to do both weekends around the half term week. We also need to do some varnishing and a bit of touching up so a short break should facilitate this.

We took Lola the dog for a 2 mile walk today, very enjoyable but a rare event as she is still too young for a long walk/run.

Still keen on a cratch and cover but it will have to wait as it is not a necessity as Lola now has her home in the space between the engine ole and the back cabin.

Much needed boaty weekend

Needed a break so of to the boat we went last Friday. We were going to pop up to Rugeley and stay overnight when we realised that the King's Bromley Hog roast was on on Saturday night. We decided to see what it was like. So Saturday morning we did a thorough pump out and many thanks to the lady who did most of it for us, a real help. It is also so much easier when it is not a timed machine. We managed to give it a damn good clean and then, instead of Blue we inserted a green enzyme product - lets see how well it works. A real pain is I do not know where the breather pipe is for the poo tank, wish I did - another job to add to the list when we refurbish the bathroom.

Instead of staying over we popped up to Rugeley for a short stop. Not a bad town but a bit here and there type of place. Having said that it had all we needed. We then then went on to Brindley Aqueduct just past Rugeley, winded and headed back to the Marina. Whilst winding and i mean whilst, a boat had the temerity to pass us in mid wind. Said boat was not showing her name but past through Rugeley to the Plum Tree pub and moored up, so what was gained by impatience was maybe three minutes.

Now then, I was reliably informed by Missus that alcohol and soft drinks would be on sale - wrong! So at 6.45 pm I had to drive to Morrison's and get some supplies. It would be easy to say Morrison's had it all. Morrison's does not keep some booze in fridges so the wine was all warm, no good for the now problem. I then headed to the local mini store and they came up with the goods, if not a quid or so more expensive but that is understandable. So back to the Marina with the goods and we enjoyed a wee drink and some pork sandwiches as well as a good old folk group. No idea if we won anything in the prize draw, probably not is is our luck.

Apologies for the poor piccie but this was all I could manage for the Hog Roast, the folk group were very good.

Slight problem with our next door neighbour as they have a dog which is very frightened of other dogs, a product of poor or non-existent socialisation (the dog that is!). He was very nice and even suggested moving to another berth (his boat that is). We have agreed to help said dog socialise with our puppy rather than them moving. A difficult job but we will help where we can.

So different to Mercia, King's Bromley is packed with boats. I think that this is an indication of popularity and location. Being close to Great Haywood and the Coventry, cruising routes are relatively plentiful, suits us down to the ground I say. Best of all, a good distance from Stensons Lock although I do hear BW are going to work on it as part of the winter stoppages. Plenty of restaurants/ pubs with food on the cut too. Not that we frequent them regularly but its nice to have the opportunity.

Next journey is probably weekend after next and will, in the main, be to stock up for our week away. I would like to take her down to Fradley and moor there overnight.

A little about BW. I as are many, worry about how they will perform when they make the transition to a charity given they seem about 40 million short of what they need. Having had contact with them my opinion is that they need a complete organisational review, starting at the bottom and working to the top. By doing it this way, the management structure will reflect the business instead of the other way around. I hold no expectation that this will happen given the salaries of the senior managers, which in my opinion is deplorable and without foundation based on value provided. And here was I thinking that David Camerabum had banned bonuses to public servants in the control of a government department. How the Chief Executive can take such a bonus saddens me as I believe it is indicative of his management behaviour, all for one and one for one.

If one earns a bonus, I actually believe it should be paid, but the bar to earn one must be based on performance beyond the expected standard. I have not witnessed this nor can I find any reasoning to justify the bonuses.

Any how back to the purpose of my diary blog (apols for the rant). I need to review what we take to the boat as the boot of our estate is always packed, even for a weekend. This is proven by the numerous trips I must make to take stuff out of the boat and back to the car.

So another weekend on Hotel NB Lola. We do need to do some jobs but none of them are urgent, mainly painting and making a dog gate in various parts of the boat.

Seems a possibility for half term. Not sure yet as its quite a bit of effort for the crew in a week but its certainly do-able. We will decide nearer the date as we do not want to be boating in rain, the girls just won't have it.

Back to the boat for a weekend jaunt to Rugeley next weekend, any decent watering holes appreciated, dog and child friendly or unfriendly appreciated (good excuse for me n the missus to go out on our own!)

Not found out about the calor gas floor mat thingy, will just have to wait until the next pullout brochure.

Popped up to the boat with the intention of painting the sides below the gunwhale but Sixpence was back so we could not put the boat on long morring ropes. Instead, I painted the gas locker with hammerite and we tidied up the back cabin so we could stow the Genny. In fact there is now enough room in the bow locker to stow it but we prefer the genny closer to us and in a more secure place. I am going to by a 13 Kg Calor mat if i can find the accessory magazine I saw it in! no boating this or next weekend so I have update the Cheshire ring page and have now completed it so far as Castlefield. not much more to do now.

Following an email I have now entered basic timings for the whole trip, check it our at the Cheshire ring Page

Went back to the boat yesterday to do some jobs.

First, I cleared out the bow locker (gas locker). What a mess. hanging upside down is a killer but it had to be done. when all was empty I cleaned off the rust on the floor, it was in a very poor state. Loads of rust came off and I then had to dry the locker using our electric fan heater. After this I then painted the floor of the locker with Vactan. Vactan is a chemical mix which recovers rusty areas and then allow you to paint using a suitable primer/all in one. I was pleased I did this as I discovered two more kart tyres which I will convert to fenders to be used when against concrete etc, they work fab. whilst the Vactan was drying I took the opportunity to fit plastic tubing over the bow fender chains. This helps keep the paint from being scratched. I also took the opportunity to test the 5ltr tin of Hammerite direct to rust black smooth paint, £55 from a decorating warehouse in Stapleford, Notts). It was good value given how much 2.5ltrs costs from various places, about £35.

I painted behind the bow fender and a little beyond as a test area to see how well it takes.

The Vactan was still to wet to put the gas bottles back in so I decided to call it a day and go home, set to return Tuesday to complete the job. Got home and guess what? i had left my work mobile on the boat, bum I say. So, with the missus, I went back to collect it and use the fan heater to dry off the locker and replace the gas bottles. I just did not want to leave them in the boat. I will hammerite the locker, in black, next week. Please with the days work but tired and my right leg is still painful if I exercise too much - read the coming post on the Cheshire ring to find out what happened.

We also met our near neighbours on board NB Third Time Lucky and NB Sixpence, the latter was heading towards Rugeley for the night.

Snug in Portland Basin, readying to hit the the Ashton and locks into Manchester. Rain seem to have let off a bit now, boy did it pee down during the night!

Did Marple yesterday, very difficult paddles I say. Could not find a decent mooring till nearly on the Ashton and was buying fenders from Portland when in our chat I was offered a night in the secure basin ere for a fiver. Bargain, took opportunity to diesel up, wished I had done the pump out too but we were facing wrong way and pump out access is flush with boat sides as we have narrow gunwhales. Still, we can prob sort it tomorrow, could always use the hand pump out kit, not!

Ok, Westport Lake to Marple

Bit of a catch up.

Here we are at Marple. How did we get here from Westport Lake?

Ok, Westport Lake to Harecastle. We got waved straight in, how lucky was that!

Out of the northern end of Harecastle and we turned for the Maccie.

What a lovely canal. We stopped at Oakgrove last night and had a meal in the pub over the road, food ok but over-priced, forgot my egg (part of a mixed grill) and over cooked the steak. Considering it was £16 I expected better and so did the chef as he made my meal complementary, bill still came to £80 though.

Leaving Oakgrove at 8.30 am, we got to the hydraulic swing bridge, checked for traffic and started to drop the barriers. Some loon of a granny sporting her blue rinse, drove past as the barriers were falling, what a complete numpty. The barriers just missed the roof.

Past Macclesfield (about 10.36) we did wend our merry way to Bollington where we stopped for provisions and classic pie lunch at 11.30. Two meat and tattie pies and two sausage rolls which turned out to be sausage pies. The lady serving had to be 80 if she was a day so no problems.

Leaving Bollington at 12:15 we aimed to stop between Bridges 4 and 3 before Marple. We could not as there is a ledge which prevents mooring. We spotted a mooring just past a narrow bit by Bridge 2 but then found a far better mooring opposite the water point at Marple, excellent luck but no fish dinner tonight.

Photos to follow when I get the chance as the puter is in demand!

Wednesday its the Marple locks and then on to Hyde or further if time is on our side.

Stone to Westport Lake

08:20 to 13:45 today.

Cleared Meaford Locks by 09:25, a lovely sunny day. Dog was sick 3 times this morning, obviously ate something that did not agree.

Nice mooring stretch after bridge 96 if heading west.

We made Bridge 102 by 09:50, lovely journey and surprisingly few boats still.

Through Barlaston by 10:00. We got to Trentham Locks with a bit of a queue and we also got "snapped" by an RSPCa guy who was taking photos for charity (£1 a set of 4 pictures), emailing them to a given email address, why not?

Interesting piccie of ducks at Bridge 105, there were dozens of them, clearly a popular feeding place.

Reached the Incinerator welcoming you to Stoke at 11:38.

So, into Stoke. Last time we were here a bottle was thrown from the road above and landed on the boat. Also, the first Stoke lock, filled incredibly slowly because a paddle was out of action. No ground paddles here so things slow down a tad - not that I am complaining. The climb to the Caldon was enjoyable but we decided to remain on course for Harecastle.

Some photos next as we pass through Stoke to where we are now, Westport Lake, just shy of the Harecastle which we shall do tomorrow, open from 8am to 6pm as it is summer opening.

Kings Bromley to Stone

Ok, so we have started another journey of discovery, Kings Bromley to Kings Bromley.......... via the Cheshire Ring.

We started on 19th August, mid afternoon and decided to use Pearsons Guide as a marking tool.

So, Kings Bromley departure 15:25 through Rugeley. At 15:51 we are passing Armitage Shanks potty place, the toilet makers

Here they are all ready for their first flush.

At 16:05 we were passing the Restaurant "Plum Pudding" just after the wee narrows.

Apparently the Plum Pudding has a good reputation, one day we will find out if its deserved.

By 16.25 we were at Bridge 62A Pearsons Timings for this page were perfect.

This made me laugh, what you find on the cut!

We stopped at Wolseley near Bridge 69 at about 18:30, later than we would normally but we wanted to make some distance. We have moored here before and it is fine, not too noisy given it is close to the railway line.

Saturday 20th, started at 08:20. Photos to follow when connection is better.

Lunch was had on the go. We passed a boat which had to be cooking bacon earlier, so no surprises I requested a bacon sandwich.

We arrived at Stone at 15:05 mooring above lock 30. had an intersting stoppage in the lock right opposite the Star inn Pub. Felt like the Gate had failed. I reckoned great result, right next to the pub. Sadly, the missus discovered a huge length of lead piping (or so it seemed) had caught in the gate, rmeoving it and solving the problem, shame I say.

Never mind we are now moored just above lock 30 near the rising sun pub, which I intend to find shortly!

Boat is behaving, I was surprised how few were on the move as we have only ever had one boat in front of us at locks so far, I do hope that is not famous last words. I can also feel the sun on my face.

Genny is on for now, a bit cloudy here too - good result for the Geordies 1 nil win against the macams (Sunderland).

Lola - the boat- new home

So we move Lola but alas I did not take any pictures. So, here's a few of the new home

Nice Mooring, quiet as we like it. Already met the skipper of Blossom Too, very nice chap too.

got the Three mobile sorted at last. What a palaver. Orange not wanting to let go and Three not able to transfer the number so I did it myself. But I now have an iPhone with tethering at half the price offered by orange - I wonder how long the deal will last.

So I have my GPS dongle, my laptop, waterexplorer.com, my Pearson's, Nicholson's, and canal planner, lets hope we do not suffer from stoppages for too long - acceding that they will happen.

Next post will be on the go lets hope we don't hit too many early delays, hence the early planned starts. Lola - the dog, I am sure will help us get up early am.

Bits n bobs

Ok, first of all. why is it when i try to log in using IE9 I end up always being logged out when i am viewing my blog. every time I try to log in and remain at the blog I get moved to blogger. I am now using firefox because it does not leave me in this perpetual struggle.

We have been watching Tom and Jan going through their trial and tribulations on NB Waiouru. It is amazing what people will do, I am shocked and feel a little guilty if this is the kind of welcome those who want to enjoy our waterways recieve. I am confident that these boat builders days in the boat business are over. The amount of publicity, both in Waterways World and Canal Boat as well as postings in CWDF and others blogs will result in even the most cursory search revealing these peoples history.

I am desparate to get on holiday ASAP and even tried to bring my holiday forward to no avail, too many meetings already booked. Best I can do is leave early on my last day before holidays.

I have checked the ability to get to Guide Bridge wihtin six days, from King's Bromley and it appears we should make it easily. Famous last words.

I am trying to get my handset unlocked by orange, what a faff. I want to use Three and their excellent price plan with tethering but Orange are conspiring to slow me down

Preparation for the cheshire ring

So, up t the boat today, We had Lola with her safety harness on. She cried a bit on the way out but seemed fine on the way back. At least she was not sick. She was very interested in the boat, mainly about how to get out but she seemed quite chilled out. Met a near neighbour, Ron on NB Blossom Too. nice chap indeed.

The boat is watered and ready to go, probably need to fill her empty fuel tank after the first few days, we shall see what the prices look like. Not to keen on seeing all this stuff about the EU objecting to our Red diesel split.

We will probably do some varnishing on the way out to keep the window frames up to scratch and I might re paint Lola's name on the starboard side.

I really could have slept over but Lola has not had her second injections yet - next Wednesday and then a week is needed for it to take so our first opportunity to sleep over will be the holiday. Out of interest I checked prices for narrow boat hire. £1,400 for a week! with some. Amazing prices and makes me feel very comfortable with our decision to buy.

We have also been ebaying - as sellers, already sold £200 worth of loft detritus.

I am keen to understand and mention in my blog how we get on through Manchester so I will make a special effort to blog and photo the experience.

Willington to Kings Bromley

30th and 31st July 2011.

Well, what a day yesterday was!

We left Mercia Marina at about 9.30 am after a pump out.

The new lounge is superb, photos of all this tomorrow.

Passing Willington fine, very quiet. All was well till about 1/2 a miel from Dallow Lane Lock then the IWA fextival moorers commenced. It was mental! Double breasting all the way past Shobnall. Single file route till passed Shobnall. I spoke to Justin from Aqua Narrowboats (they fitted the ne lounge) to thank him for a superb job, just the cushions to be measured tomorrow at Kings Bromley. Justin was onboard Tom Kitten, a recent fit out of his, and she looked stunning as I scraped her side oops! it was very narrow and I was exchanging info wiht him as we passed. It did look very busy. Lots of photos to share tomorrow.

Angus was me ship mate again by the way.

The journey was slowed by two Shakespeare Boats one in front, going very oddly as they would not move into a lock until well after the boat exiting had left, thus slowing the process, not that it bothered me much. they also tried to drop a paddle with the windlass connected inward!
the boat behind just waited, no offer of help to speed her progress so Angus was dancing around the locks. We moored up pass Shade House Lock at Fradley last night (7.30 pm) so we could have a pint or two, which we did! Food was ok at the Swan too, heard some people diss it, saw no reason why, it was tasty, sufficient and delivered reaosnably quickly given they were very busy. they had live music and singing too, rock stuff mainly so it was right up my street.

We awoke at 06.41 (to be precise), had a full cooked breakfast (by me) and then tootled the last wee way into Kings Bromley. Straight into the correct mooring. So nice to be able to leave the car right next to the mooring to enable off and on loading, much easier than Mercia where our mooring was some twenty or more boats away which meant hard labour to move stuff.

The mooring, for us, is ideal, so pleased it was available. So a new set of crusing routes now available including back to The Bridge Inn of course.

Boat behaved herself perfectly except when I tried to stop her using the middle rope and she was going to fast, rope snapped and hit me on the ankle, big bruise to prove it and lesson learned. I even towed a wee boat up Fradley locks to the coventry.

Met Cap'n Ahab on Wandering Bark and he noted my nice painted roof by saying, "its downhill now". Sure is.

So a long journey time and a good reminder of how delays can occur without there being a problem. Still, the excellent weather was wonderful. As was seeing the IWA festival for free!

Aqua Narrowboats, Boat Magicians

Well,

True to their word, the boat is scheduled for completion by Friday pm. Discussion was had today on the carpet and that should be going down Friday morning. I am surprised that they are making Friday given the limited time they had. I am certain that they will not be shy with quality and will post some piccies of the finished work on Saturday.

So, if anyone is at IWA this weekend give a wave to Lola as she passes!

I reckon we will be passing at about 12 noon, obviously not stopping (save for Dallow lane Lock) given the limitations.

there will be no weighing anchor or ropes as we are on a schedule to make Fradley for a pint.

I head about NB Waiouru, such a shame to see a new boat in that condition. My heart goes out to them and I wish sincerely that we shall meet on the cut under happier circumstances.

Like having a new baby, maybe not so demanding.

Not much really, just fed up that we cannot get on her because of the work, but it will be worthwhile. I am really looking forward to going past the IWA if the work is completed on time. Also looking forward to the new mooring, will be very different to that at Mercia

Hopefully, we will get 2 weekends in before our proper holiday late august, with lola puppy on her maiden holiday, not that will be interesting.

Ok

Boat Lola is getting her new lounge from today(ish). Been to Aqua this morning and agreed the layouit with the carpenter, also agreed a carpet floor to help with securing the wheeled lounge units, much as Aqua do for their hire fleet. I could have asked for a different structure but I really like a more modern take.

Now, puppy Lola.

She has arrived! I colected her earlier than planned as I was helping out the breeder with some jobs (we are nearly friends)

So, the journey home was a little fraught as she was quite worried abouot being in a car for the first time. 20 mins and I stopped to pick up my daughter who took Lola on her lap for the last 5 mins. In that time she managed to sick all over her, depsite me warning Jo and givinh her a big old bath towel as cover.

New Mooring sorted

So, our new mooring at Kings Bromley is berth 212, next door to Sixpence.

The mooring is at the back to the site but that suits us.

The work on Lola is due to start Monday or so and I am popping up on Thursday to speak to the carpenter to make our requirements clear. Its simple really, Lyndon let him know (ps the cheshire ring is a definite)! We want a L shaped layout like on the aqua fleet which acts as seating area, eating area, acts as 2 singles or one double with as much storage as possible. I expect that there may need to be some stealing from the current sitting area near the stove but that is of no concern. Oh and all complete, with cushions by 29 July! I suspect the cushions may be delayed so don't throw the current ones out.

Doggy delivery is still scheduled for a week today, I am going over on Thursday to do some apex cladding of a stable unit so I will have plenty of time to fuss Lola the puppy, and her brothers/sisters.
So may people have warned about the biting that its getting boring, of course we know what will happen, we have done all the reading and taken much advice. Crate has been purchased, dog bed to collect today, food paid for and toys on way.

Plan is work to finish by 29/7, allowing us to move her to Kings Bromley. We will go this Saturday am to check on fabrics. I am guessing we will have to make do with regard to cushions - if the interior is finished on time. I seem to recall original job was set for June.

It will be fun delivering her back to Mercia for servicing etc, kind of a good excuse really.

After the lounge area will follow, in October a new Bathroom, that should be fun. I am inclined to keep the pump out.

Puppy crate has been ordered. It is sad we cannot buy from our local pet shop but simple economics are hard to argue with. Local Shop - £79 amazon £44, exactly same product. Arden and Grange puppy food also ordered.

Well, lovely rain. Off to Mercia Saturday for more painting I hope. We need to paint the hand rails, probably using epitane. But first, its chainsaw lesson number 1 prior to some serious log cutting. We are starting to think about selling these logs once they have seasoned, so 12 months should set the birch and oak up fine then we can test burn rates etc in the morso. After this we will look at selling to various outlets if we decide we want to. Otherwise its a lot of seasoned wood to hang around with. The trick is to season effectively so we might try the german round approach and see what comes.

Talking about round approach I am also going to paint the boats sliding hatch with the same colour used for the roof, for now.

The Cheshire Ring and other stuff

So, two undercoats on and gloss to follow tomorrow. Lola is 57 ft long and by the time we had finished a coat the start of the job had taken and was near dry such was the good weather.

Mercia Marina had their festival which allowed a break to be taken with the girls. An enjoyable event.

So, to the Cheshire Ring. We are going around 19 August and am planning around 13 days to complete, travelling from Kings Bromley, doing the Ring anti-clockwise. Canal Planner has been used and I am averaging 6-7 hours per day. I have added 4 days tolerance for problems. Canal Planner seems to have not paid for the domain name and the google mapping no longer works properly, you cannot transfer the map to a google representation.

The route plan at present is

Pearson Guide will be used.

Any advice on the trip from previous expeditions much appreciated.

A quick update

Undercoating the roof this weekend, possibly two coats, we shall see. This is in between my first chainsaw lesson which consists of safety, safety, safety followed by cross cutting a felled birch tree, the results of which, if not rotten will be transferred to home for further seasoning. After this we will probably cut some pre-seasoned wood. I am tinkering with selling it on as there is a huge supply but not sure if this is viable.

Was at an event in London, the Park Plaza hotel over the last few days. Nice hotel but £3.50 for a small bottle of water! No surprise the hotel was full of our American and Japanese friends. Just 50 yards away, same bottle 95p in the local. Nice hotel though. I walked along the embankment next to the London Eye and looked out for narrowboats, sorry none to be found. You can appreciate why the Thames at this point is a daunting challenge with these trip boats ignoring any moving traffic. I did have the naughty idea of playing loud salsa music as I passed Big Ben but decided to play safe and play Boris the Spider by the Who (connection - Boris Johnson, London Mayor)

Back to the event in the hotel, we were having a business dinner (No, I did not drink or get trolleyed like some!). A chap next to me was showing off his Ariel atom (aware of these as my brother owns one) and I in turn showed my hand, a picture of the boat. A vote then ensued on the table and the narrowboat won 8 to 1. I celebrated with another glass of water (how well behaved was I with free booze flowing).

Painting Time and the chainsaw

Well, its time next saturday for the undercoats on the roof, weather permitting. Am looking forward to the painting as it is the pre-cursor to the rest of the boat. It is also probably the last opportunity on the boat prior to the lounge re-fit, due prior to end of July.

Now the chainsaw. I have decided to buy one and have formal training. The puppies breeder has a large wooded area as part of their property and a chat with the owner who we know through friends, reveals a joint interest in wood cutting and a need to thin out the wooded area. Hence the chainsaw and the opportunity to have enough wood for as long as I cut it. Ok we need to season it but there is plenty already seasoning, so we should have stocks for this autumn/winter as well as a supply to other friends.

The dangers of chainsaws are recognised and all the necessary safety equipment including trousers will be purchased as well as a formal training course and mentoring by an existing experienced wood cutter. It is a serious business that requires serious attention.

Not a bad trip all told.

Tried the Motion X GPS and its fine, except you need to keep a weather eye on it. Trip down was really nice, locks not too bad, no rain.

Ate in the Clock warehouse which was enjoyable. Quite a poor tv reception below the Shardlow lock.

Very popular location as it was quite full. Next say we found some numpty had moored at the lock, making landing impossible so Missus was dropped off at bridge before. The offenders were advised by a chap in a land rover before we got there but advice was not needed as the sign was midships to the hire boat so they knew fine well that they should not have been there. Ordinarily I would not have been bothered but there was no where to land. Thats life, won't be the first and won't be the last, the funny bit was the hirer asked if I needed any help - guilty conscience lol.

We doubled up on the way back and had a 30 min wait at Swarkstone. The boat is behaving superbly - touch wood. One boat we shared a few locks with was Kathryn Louise, his story of three engines was quite interesting. boat was 6 month old when he purchased it - without a survey tut tut. Engine was screwed. he bought a recon, that died too. he now has a Beta 38 I think (if thats the one down form the 43) and is happy so far. Very nice couple, chilled and easy going.

We got hit by some lovely rain on the way back but our waterproofs saw us through.

Paintwork is still flaking off on top but no matter as it is going to be wet and dryed and painted before too long. One thing I noticed was the lack of vibration from the new deck boards, such a difference.

Oldest child is at Henleys womens regatta this weekend, doing some training for her outing at the vets races in a few weeks. Jo is also in the BRC at nottingham soon - busy girl.

Whatever the weather

So, tomorrow is boaty time. We are going to Shardlow come what may. Probably find somewhere near the Clock Warehouse or the other pubs. The Clock is good because its in a good canal position, away from the houses and next to the turning point.

No matter how crap other things are the boat is our hideaway, our place which protects us from the other bit of our life - work. I could get all philosophical but basically people forgot we are only here for a while - the problem is what makes us agitated is different in all of us. Ah well, I will be palm reading on me boat with a bottle of the hard stuff to hand, have I had a hard day you think, nope I have had a day off!

Our home brew wine is a hit. it actually tastes more light semillon chardonnay that it does pinot grigio. I am back to my old ways. I learnt home brew from a 79 year old retired squadron leader by the name of Eddie Edwards. He could make sherry he could and it was bloody strong15% by volume.

I am now making some chardonnay and will be buying some more demijohns so I can increase production.

My new BW licence appeared in good time, I have determined that avoidable contact is the best way of working with BW. send a letter and keep a record as well as send by recorded delivery and you get action.

Alas, farewell to Mercia Marina

Just emailed our notice of intention to leave Mercia end of July. A sad day because Mercia is truly excellent. The only reason we are leaving is to venture into new territory.

As new owners Mercia has been superb with excellent facilities, including a shop, cafe, Midland Chandlers and of course the team at Aqua Narrowboats. All is not lost as we will be popping back as and when Lola needs a warranty service or other work doing, Aqua have proven themselves a competent and professional company. We may even change our mooring habits if we can get a decent 6 months deal as having Lola at Mercia over the winter is a great benefit to us, we will see next year.

So hello Kings Bromley in August!

A trip to Branston and back

So, off to Branston we went Saturday Lunch time. We stopped westbound at Branston rather than continue past and turn at Barton turns.

Off to the Bridge Inn we went for 5.45 pm. Good decision to go a little earlier, within an hour it was full. Food still up to usual excellent quality.

I have been checking out a new Iphone app, Motion X-GPS. Pretty good at recording distance, speed, map location etc, more research still required though.

Came back this morning. I awoke at 7 am and suggested we make a move given the impending weather. No, was the answer, we will go at 9am, just as it started raining, and we all know how it rained, all day, much needed for our farmers and gardeners and allotment owners, but I did get wet. Still moored up, checked bilges and away we went back home.

Off again next Friday am and we have not decided where to as yet. I am thinking about a trip to the Clock Warehouse or maybe the navigation on the Erewash, the weather will be the decider.

No real boaty time

Ah well, no boat time this weekend save taking her for a fuel fill up and removing the Genny for some work on the allotment. Will be out next weekend come what may as I will be spending 5 days in the office with no parole!

Boating will be to the usual branston unless I have to be rowing transport manager for Johanna. If that happens we will just pop up to Willington and overnight there.

The allotment is a new twist for us, we have only just go it and already we have started to put it to work. A quiet start because we want to understand how to "allot" our parts properly. We have been researching and I now understand that there is more to this than one thinks, especially with clay heavy soil, apparently some lime is needed and some week later, some manure.

Doggy matters

In response to a question, they are fox red Labrador puppies with full pedigree records and these are running retrievers. Puppies do not usually get to run until about 18 months but this can vary. The puppy we will be owning will be determined four weeks in, we are lucky to have first choice. Out of the seven pups there are three girls, one of the girls will become ours.

A trip to Crick and a visit to the puppies

Well, a busy weekend it has been.

Our first visit to Crick (Sunday) was very interesting. We got there quite early so parking was easy. The site is well managed, no extra charges for parking. Wee jazz band playing as we parted with our wonga to get our wrist bands, and no rain.

I was very impressed with the layout, the little terriers with their red bandanna's made me laugh. We headed off to look at the engines first passing the water purifier guys selling at £180. Had a quick chat at Canaline stand where I learnt that a complete engine manual could be obtained if I went through Aqua, which I shall do.

The boats were all on display showing their finery. I said hello to Justin from aqua who had brought Tom Kitten with them, she did look very sleek. Looked over a couple of other boats and got asked twice by a nice Irish man if I wanted to buy a gardner engine. My girls got some ices cream and I avoided the burger and chips. Saw Phil Speight, advertising Craftmaster paints.

All in all a nice event and I will return next year. Looking forward to IWA at Burton next.

Now, some pictures of the puppies

We are lucky to get first choice and have decided on one of the three girls as we may want to breed in a year or two.

So in four weeks we choose and four weeks later we collect. Hopefully 23rd of July will be collect day. We can then arrange first vaccination and the second, depending on drugs used these are either done in stages or as one injection, something to discuss with the vet. After that its lead control, training classes and then a slow move to her running. The advice is to hold back on running her until she is 18 months old, we shall see. Lola is a family dog and I need to make a decision on indoor sleeping or out, whichever, she will be in a crate.

No allotmenting as the rain makes it a messy event. Next week I will get the Genny down and secure the shed as well as taking the water butt down. The water is hand pumped from a natural well so we will pump to the holding tank and then use my water pump to transfer to the water butt, thus saving time and energy when using it.

Next boaty weekend is 11th June, probably up to Branston. Late July will be lounge rebuild time, leaving the last weekend in July - 30th and 31st to move her to Kings Bromley, I do hope they will accept her a day early, else I will stay with her until the Monday morning.

Lola, the dog (not the boat of the same name) will go on her first boat holiday on 20th August, either a week or two depending on how we feel. May need to change plans given the new business.

The Aborted Trip and Allotment and new Puppies

Went to the boat yesterday and stayed overnight. We decided to leave early because the wind and rain suggested no moving. Also, we are getting a little bored doing the same trip every weekend we go away. Down the doubles past Stenson is a pain given Stenson Lock is a bugger, going west we see the same route we have used many a time. The move to Kings Bromley seems well timed.

The other reason was we have, after two years waiting, got our allotment. Only a quarter is usable as the rest needs a bit of weeding. We (I) went today and sprayed the area with a good weed killer and to also plan how we are going to get the most from it. The greenhouse at home will be moved to the allotment, which is ideal because the puppies arrived yesterday

So where the greenhouse is will become the dogs poo area, once trained. Life is moving in the direction of travel I like, boat, dog, allotment.

Lets hope the weekend after next is an improvement, we may be more disposed to trip out if the weather is better. As I said, once moved I think we will be happy guys because we have so many options.

Deck Boards

Went up to the boat today, had to ring ahead because I had forgot the keys.

Anyway, the new boards are fitted, just a wee issue of one not sitting level. I intend to solve this using silicon and possibly cut hose, should be easy to level up if one takes ones time, famous last words!

They look ok and the insulation is keeping sound to a bear minimum, most sound output is now coming from within the boat, so with the back doors closed and the hatch pulled to its nigh on silent. I knew I could not achieve perfection but I can deal with the inside reasonably easily.

Caught up with Lyndon from Aqua and had a bare two minutes chat as he was wokring hard doing their hire fleet turnaround.

One other job added to my list, the need to replace some of the window insulation, anti vibration, time to look at the chandlers site.

So off next weekend somewhere, probably Branston as I mentioned in an earlier post.

New Deck boards

Ok, the latest.

New deck boards with sound insulation have now been ordered. As we have a cruiser stern this has not come cheap. Money needs to be watched carefully after this but most of the biggy jobs are done, just the lounge in July and the Bathroom sometime later. Popped up to the boat last weekend but was to busy to blog, just as well really cos not much to say, just checked out batteries and bilges and removed some bits needed for home.

The deck boards rattled as we potted along so I am hoping something can also be done to help resolve this, rubber or some such under the t frame (which is under the deck boards and is removable) should do it.

As usual, Aqua are doing the work, their quotes (and I do test them) are reasonable for the quality they turn out. They are not cheap (deck boards with good insulation) and I got a wee surprise when the quote appeared but when you split it out they are actually very competitive.

Hopefully, when I go to visit Saturday there will be a visible improvement and superior sound insulation. now I know some like to hear the hum of the engine, I am not a traditionalist (yet) and I like a quiet engine room. Now the informed will say keep away from the missus and the kids - that's just not fair! But seriously, the ability to cruise talk, and be heard, particularly hearing passing boaters will improve quality of relaxation.

Summer holidays seem to comprise of the usual weekends away - will be nice having a new cruising base at Kings Bromley, supported by the mandatory week or so with the puppy - due in 11 days time!

The question is where do we go? The Coventry for peaceful trips and for more energetic perhaps towards Stoke or back towards Branston to our current favourite Italian food at the Bridge Inn (see earlier posts)

Am getting back into this rowing malarkey and am contemplating a bit of sculling over the summer, when time permits.

Weekend after next (bank holiday weekend) will be a trip to Branston and then return in time for the street party - we have them every few months.

My exploits into photography continues but it must take its place between dads taxi and the boat and the rowing and the cycling and the work and the gardening and the visiting and the decorating (well maybe not the latter) and the ...........

Bit windy and cold today. Whilst I would like to make the most of the boat whenever, we need a couple of weekends at home so the girls can keep up with homework and can chill in their rooms/play with their friends and we can do some gardening and cleaning and stuff. So, boaty weekend May bank holiday - probably up to Branston Meal at the Bridge Inn and home next day if the weather is set fair.

Got the RCR renewal today and have decided to pay the gold again even though its £50 more this year, because they now include parts within the deal. Given the recent centreflex issue, the dues would have paid off.

Insurance must be due soon to so I will need to reflect on cover. Bills Bills Bills!

Varnishing and such like

Short message

We went to the boat yesterday and did some minor works. Varnishing two window frames, more to be done. We (I more like) then cleaned around the chimney, a classic area for rust. I needed to remove paint and surface rust having treated the area with rust inhibitor last week. Then the aweful but very useful Hammerite went on http://www.hammerite.co.uk/products/no_1_rust_beater.jsp This stuff does the job but is a bugger to get off brushes etc. So we now await a warm weekend free of rain forecast so we can undercoat the lid (roof) of our tin can. I am going to do 2 coats in a day (I hope), one early am and another mid pm. The following day will be the first top coat, followed a week later we hope, by the next top coat.

The sides will then follow later in the year. I have decided a little at a time is the best way, ensuring we can still enjoy the boat.

Dog News

The puppies will be born in three weeks so we can expect our Labrador puppy to be with us end of July. We are already preparing, getting the shed ready as the puppy will be expected to live in the back garden during the short periods we will be out. With 6 weeks school holidays we should get the initial crate training well underway. The garage conversion to shed like is well underway so the big shed (it is very big) will serve as a day shelter giving the dog the run of the enclosed garden. Puppy training is organised as is dog obedience classes. We want the dog to know its place but still be happy. boat prepping is easy, we only need one child gate at present on the front. By the time puppy is big enough to join me at the tiller the pram cover will be in place, thus securing the cruiser deck.

The Cratch and cover should be fitted in August shortly after the interior conversion. That should signal the end of the major works programme.

The move to Kings Bromley is still being planned but I hope Angus will be avail to assist in the 8 hour journey. I expect we will move to Fradley on Saturday, overnighting just above Shadehouse lock and popping down t pub for a few beers. Then Sunday a wee trip to Kings Bromley. It is going to be really nice to have a new touring base. Stensons lock and Dallow Lane are getting boring. Whats good is that the Bridge Inn is only 4 hours boating away and being from a different direction the view on the way will be interesting. Being at Kings Bromley will provide the launch pad for a number of outings.

The summer holiday has not yet been planned but I am keen on repeating the 4 Counties Ring as the last time we were hiring and the need to "do" the holiday within the time frame takes a little gloss off the journey. Having said that we might just try Cheshire or wander down to Birmingham, who know? I don't!

Time to consult Canal Planner me thinks.

Maintenance Day

Went to Kings Bromley Marina today and paid our deposit for a new mooring there from August.

Mercia has been great but we have done all we can from here.

Next we went to the boat and did some sanding, rust treating and prep for painting the roof.

I do hope that the new deck boards are fitted soon, the current ones vibrate like nobodies business.

Lovely day but very windy, boat was all over the place as we went over to use the pump out.

Aqua were busy - handover day, so we said hello but let them get on.

Next week I reckon its undercoats, should get 2 in if the weather is ok. Subject to forecast we may leave it this way, or if rain is likely I will add a holding top coat. Once the roof is complete we will slowly work our way down to the gunwhales, very slowly, possibly panel by panel, we shall see.

The sanders did their jobs well and it was reasonably easy. I could have burnt off the current roof covering but there is no need if I plan for some grit blasting at some time in the future. The stove is where the worst rust is and I intend to give this some special attention on a regular basis to keep it rust free.

We do not want a pristine boat, but it would be nice for a good colour depth and a bit of shine.

Day 11 and 12 Easter Holidays 2011

The last days of our easter holiday.

So day 11 started at Zouch, a tad cold but no rain. We had intended to moor at Loughborough but a canal festival saw the available moorings diminish. But first, at Birstall on Day 10, the wanderer returned from her rowing practice, welcome back Johanna, I see the easter egg went down well!

And thats it folks. We got back at about 2pm after a wee wait at Stensons Lock.

The boat behaved itself very well indeed. I checked the stern gland one last time and gave it a gentle tightening - yes the prop still turns by hand. I also checked the prop and removed some rope and other bits. Batteries are well behaved, when I connected the charger from the mains, it presented the batteries as being fully charged, which they should have been. The rocking sensation has gone from my body to returnSaturday when we give her a thorough clean, pump out and prep for roof repaint in advance of a complete re-paint, grit blasting will have to wait.

So my next posts will concentrate, I hope, on painting.

So, from near Braunston to where we are today...... Crick, just near ABNB Brokerage, this side of the 14 day moorings unlike some.

Went up the Braunston locks in a pair, made life much easier, thanks NB Smoke. thence thorugh the tunnel, not bad.

Then to the Watford flight - just, just made it there in time for the last up flight. A little beyond the top we met Red Admiral, so close to the boat in front that I could not adjust before tapping the side of his pride and joy, what a nob, complianing that I tapped him, rather than retort using his demeanour, I just said, chill its summer!. Then a nice quiet pottle along through Crick tunnel to where we are now.

Day 5 Easter Holidays 2011

Big day today. we set off from Newbold with the principle target of making the Old Royal Oak Pub, just past Hillmorton Locks, by 12 noon. Plan achieved. We had lunch, its a Hungry Horse so simple fayre, and dropped Johanna off to link up with a friend going to Peterborough for rowing training. It will be Jos first ever double skull experience tomorrow, wish I could have watched. For 14 she now whoops me in ergo practice (rowing machines). Her splits are near perfect and she can easily hit 5700 metres in 30 mins on 26. Seems I have unleashed a rowing beast!

After the drop off we moved on to where we are now, just shy of Braunston. For tomorrow its past Braunston and then onto the GU Leicester line. If anything, a tad too hot this pm so we stopped at 3.30 pm and put the genny on so Sarah can enjoy some no big sister tv time.

We were staring to get that well known toilet smell so time for a pump out - Valley cruises, job done by 10 am - including two 360 turns because we were facing the wrong way and our pump out is located on the side, not the gunwhale, odd I know but we have narrow gunwhales.

Day 3 Easter holiday 2011

Ok not a bad day. Missus said a guy at Alrewas asked if the canal was the Grand union! nice one.We had moored last night about 200 metres from Alvecote Marina. Pleased we did as it was a nice quiet night. Being out in the country, so to speak, my hours are changing, sleep at dusk, awake a dawn, although I usually wake early, asleep by 9pm?

Having to use windows live writer as the location I am at, Hartshill, is in a cutting and signal is poor. Something did not work becaus ethe pictures have not transferred in live writer, never mind

We trooped past Alvecote Marina about 9.30 am and kept going until we met the pair of locks at Bradley Green. The lifts in the locks all went without incident.

Day one and we are moored up in Alrewas. How I am blogging is a miracle, nearly. I could not find my vodafone dongle this morning before we left. Hey presto, I initiated Iphone tethering and here I/we am/are!

We started from Willington at about 10 am and got here at about 3.30pm, what a day to start!

A few gongoozlers on the way and the odd hire boaty people, only one of which hit me, over steering, looked very embarrassed as we past, I just said Hello! and he grunted hi back. Ah well.

Kids TV does not like DVDs, I think they paused the DVD for too long and it has died, tv side is fine, I will just add an old DVD player or get them to use the laptop or our bedroom tv, plenty of options.

Now then, a few piccies thanks to the SD slot as I forgot the cable!

Service and the Dementer, or is it Sedimentor?

So,

Like they promised, Aqua have installed the Dementer, oops - Sedimentor, the agglomerator and carried out the 50 hour service. they are looking at how to remove and replace the hinge pin and have found out what the button above the bilge pump was/is - the horn!. I had wondered why there was no horn and Aqua have said the wires were cut away quite tight so I reckon I could not see them. Anyhow, the annoying air horn can be retained for speeders and such like. I like caring for my boat as though it were my home. Ok, I have had a few major jobs recently but these were planned in. The next two jobs are the lounge, already scheduled for July and then the bathroom, not yet scheduled. After that its sit back for a while before the sand/gritblasting and a nice few coats of paint for an sturdy finish. not looking for glass effect, just nice clean lines and good protection in depth - the missus loves kissing, especially lock sides!

Work is tiring now, a colleague did say it had been a longtime since Christmas, were they right! I need this break and I need to go slow, except for getting to Rugby, but that should be ok at a steady pace anyways. I reckon I could make it in two long days I have 4 and a half so even with gongoozlers and the extra canal traffic we should make it ok, unless the dreaded stoppage hits, then its plan B. Anyone seen plan B anywhere??

Ach well hinney, its back to the planning stopping points for its own sake, Leicester may go missed, as in straight passed, unless I can find this secure park - Abbey or the other one, I forget its name.

Fenders and names

I forgot to add to my last post the fact that I replaced the bow fender and added a double button to the rear squashed button.

Now I have to say what a good job I did. What I do not have to say was how I got the Midland Chandlers guy to cut two metres of chain into 16 link and 8 link lots and in the end did not need them at all!. Ok it was £20 but I did not want to have to make return journeys for bits of chain.

The double button looks a treat and fits perfectly, giving good protection to the rudder. The bow fender also just slipped on, the picture in my last post shows. I just need to add some tubing to protect the paintwork.

I have also now ordered some (sorry to all sign writers) temporary decals as I do not have the time at the moment to add Lolas name to the Starboard side.

I also need to decide if I should take my bike on holiday with us, just the one for shopping purposes etc.

Not heard from Aqua so am hoping they do the service etc. I have also investigated my broken hinge pin issue. There are other solutions so if they cannot sort it I will start thinking about plan b and c and so on.

My Kindle is also getting a good hammering. since 23/2 I have read 9 books, yes 9! I will need to make some choices for holidays but I do have the 3g card type so it should not be too much bother.

The weather appears unsure for next week, we shall see. What I do need to look for are night moorings and local shops, so a bit of research using canal planner etc is now in hand. Trouble is best laid plans and all that. It actually does not matter, Just being aboard and relaxed will be enough.

Now I will buy some vodafone time whilst out from Saturday so lets see how the new camera bonds.

Boaty prep and an overnight at Willington

We took some bits to the boat and cleaned various elements.

Particularly the Morso stove, for Artys benefit its a Morso Squirrel!

We also started to paint the new name on the port side. Paint was a bit thin so it was hard work. Still we will perservere and learn. May even order some stencils to help. you can see where I removed the old cast iron name plate, blinking heavy.

New chicks - 13 of them!

Bought a new camera and lens, the Canon 600D plus the 18-135mm lens.

Fabulous images compared to the old camera, just need to get used to exposure settings and filters. Check this picture out

Slight focus issue but not bad in my book.
Will get time to use it next week, hopefully with some improved images as I get used to the camera and start using the manual settings rather thasn the intelligent auto settings.

Boat had one side cleaned when we returned to Willington. We also now need a new hinge pin for the hatch lid, one sheared off which means a probable pig to extricate.

Nice to have semi clean bilges again. I need to clean the crud off the bottom before we set off next Saturday, or Friday - not decided which yet.

Both being fitted next week by Aqua - thanks Justin. Now, I say thanks because Aqua (aka Justin) have to be the best company I have yet to meet in terms of engine work and such like. Why? Damned easy to say, nice, honest, trustworthy people. I say this advisably, I have met so many, shall we say less than helpful people in the motor trade business (car and canal) that Aqua are a revelation and a pleasure to do business with. What connection do I have? I pay them for jobs, no other. It is not often I recommend anyone for fear of failure, Aqua are an exception. Enough said.

Marine Diesel Engine and Boat Maintenance

Run by TB training (Tony Brooks of course), a very useful introduction. I did think I would have liked to have done this prior to buying the boat, but to do so would have limited the value because you do need some basic prior knowledge, although I am sure Tony would have got over that problem if necessary.

So, what did it include?

Diesel Fuel Systems, a very thorough grounding including some interesting stuff about sedimentors and agglomerators - I will look at this when I get to the boat.

Diesel bug was also considered in some detail as well as how to remove water from the fuel tank. I will be buying some fuel set and planning a water removal (if any exists) operation to the fuel tank. I am going to use a Pela 6000 which is an oil extractor pump. With a bit of extra bits, I expect to remove any water and also identify if the diesel bug exists in my tank. If it does then Marine 16 and thereafter regular Fuel Set will be my line of attack.

A set of simple tips and tricks have also been noted, not least putting the dipped end of the dip stick onto the back of your hand for a more accurate reading - simple!

Bleeding an engine was included as well as all I need to deliver an engine service. As the boat engine is under warranty, I will leave the servicing to Aqua for now, safe that I can do it myself when needed.

What I really do need is the full engine manual for the engine so I will do a bit of Googling once I have the engine type (un marinised name that is).

Lots of advice on oil types and how to read the types and find the best for the boat.

The course also included the practical work involved with engines by having three bench engines actually on site, see these!

We had these running and did various jobs from oil and fuel filter changes to bleeding the diesel to changing belts to engine electric fault finding as well as how to start an engine without a key - so easy when you know how.

We also looked at changing the stern gland packing whilst the boat is in the water. Domestic water systems, electrical systems, drive lines, Galvanic corrosion, hulls and props and cooling systems were all discussed over the two days at Beeston (was this weekend).

An excellent course and recommended to anyone with limited marinised motor engine experience, just a shame I cannot make the electrical course in a couple of weeks.

The course does not qualify me to do much more than fault find and some basic servicing - that's enough for me given I have RCR cover.

Willington to Branston (and back)

A fuller story of our trip to Branston Water Park.

Weather was ok but not as good as had been during the week, typical.

We popped up to the boat at 9 am for a 10 am appointment to see some layout options, Johanna was at rowing practice. We had a look around a couple of Aqua hire boats, now they are luxury quality, no question. We are happy with the adjustable layout with elements on castors, affording the ability to create two singles or a double and have a lounge/dining area.

After dropping my wife and daughter number two, Sarah, off at the boat, I went back to Nottingham to pick up Johanna.

So with Johanna on board we were away, about 11.30. Weather was getting better, slowly. a bit chilly but nothing compared to recent months. Quite a few people out and about too. So the piccies of the event, concentrating mainly on the boats we met

This is us locking on Saturday, Johanna was feeling no picture worthy. Saturday night, The Bridge Inn at Branston. food was nice but my Calzone not as good as last time. I like a Calzone with seafood, the one I got was a folded, doughy pizza. Never mind, I will be clearer next time I order. Branston was really quite quiet, moorings easy to come by.

Clocks forward, and I woke at 7am new time, up at 8, breakfast to my crew done by 9am and off we went back to Willington. A tad chilly at first, but by the time we got back to Willington, about 12.30, the sun was trying to get out.

Nothing remarkable about the trip? Well the boat behaved perfectly. Not a thing went wrong unlike a Canaltime boat whose rudder was off its bottom bearing after catching a huge log coming out of Drunken Lock (Dallow Lane to most).

The usual smattering of Anglers, some giving a nod others with better things to think of I guess.

Next trip is in a fortnight when we load the boat for the two week break, just clothes really and a water fill up etc. but I want a flying start when our holidays begin, possibly getting to Branston, we shall see.

Searching for a new home for Lola

The time has come to look for a new home for Lola so we can explore a different part of the system.

12 months is enough in one place for us. I have considered many so far
Sawley, Shardlow, Shobnall, Beeston, Nottingham, Aston, Pilings Lock, Kings Bromley. The latter is the favourite at present but we do have to go around the Leicestershire Ring so plenty of time yet. Such a change having an easy time finding a mooring, time was you needed the mooring before you thought about buying a boat.

The key is a maximum hour from home, but that still gives plenty of options. We could go as far as Northampton to the south or Huddersfield to the north. Whats more important is that the Marina is quiet and safe. Mooring on the cut is not an option for us. The price of moorings seems to be between 1800 and 2500 with various incentives. Ideally, a cruising club with shoreline power would be great, but these seem difficult to source, any suggestions would be most welcome.

As we went to Kings Bromley we stopped by Willington to do the bilge check etc, all ok.

One thing is unlikely to change and that is using Aqua for our maintenance (at Willington), they are a class apart.

The latter is my biggest frustration. Today as an example, reasonable weather made me wonder about what it would be like on the water, from my desk. Sadly, there is not much I can do about this unless we win the lottery or my wife's new business takes off, neither are likely but I am more fortunate than many.

The joy? of boating is, to me, having a new back garden as we travel or every night. The problem is even weekends are limited so far as getting away is concerned. Still, we have some holidays during Easter and we will get away then and explore some new marinas as possible candidates for next year, after that its pinch a weekend time mixed with rowing practice which really cuts into how far we can go including travel to the boat. I am thinking about somewhere on the GU, past Leicester, any recommendations much appreciated.

All this said, I know of no other hobby/way of life which appeals to me more, I hope you agree to.

A bit of tidying up

Decided to tidy boat up for our next adventure - Leicestershire Ring.

I was surprised how much wood bits I found under our bed, loads of it. Then again, not surprising given previous owner was liveaboard.

We also removed all non essential stuff, paint, varnish sanding blocks, empty grease tins, etc.

Then it was time to sort out the seven or so windlasses. I then searched for the mooring pins, alas not found till the missus found em hiding behind the anchor.

Must have off-loaded a good weight.

boat was still sitting down a tad at the back but when the woodwork to sort the lounge out is done, that will be the time to off-load some ballast and lift her a little so the uxter plate is a little higher, only a couple of inches though.

The accumulator should be replaced next week and soon after new deck boards. I had better review the insurance given the improvements.

Not much else to say, all else looks ok. Next cruise is not until 26th when we will pop up to Branston for an overnighter so we can go to the Bridge Inn for dinner and I can have one of their wonderful Calzones. This weekend was too busy with taking kids to Science Museum etc. Thinking about it I have now travelled to and from London on Friday (work) and Saturday and I have to go again tomorrow! Even worse I have to go to Kew so its long tube trip. Ah well mustn't grumble

Not a good day - not a good next day either

We left Wyvern marine on the Erewash at about 11.30 on Saturdayt and it was a nice, mizzly day. The new external skin tank keeping temp just below 80 - excellent. We popped along the Erewash to Trent Lock and up the Trent, just look at the wash!

Thence to Sawley no 2 lock, the electric one. Here I am at the leccie locks

Then it was up the Sawley cut and out at Sawley No 1 back onto the Trent. from there we moved up to the derwent Lock and back onto the Trent and Mersey without a problem. It was a lovely trip as far as Weston lock.

Into the lock, bit of reverse, BANG Metallic noise almost. Engine fine but no drive. Quick look below, centre flex coupling in two, separate bits - broken at the rubber bit and a slightly bent propeller, very slightly so it's still easily usable. Looks like summit stuck in the prop stopping the shaft but not the engine side hence the coupling being buggered. Rang RCR, turned up in 30 mins. The RCR guy was superb. He took the old coupling off, took me to Midland Chandlers where a new 1 1/2 inch coupling was purchased. Back to the boat and it was fitted and done. All in 1 1/2 hours, now that's service for you. I do wonder what level RCR I need next year as the only drive bit not replaced is the propeller - so far!

We stayed at Weston overnight and next morning made our way back to Willington by about 12 noon.

Stensons lock is a pig. Even if going up and the lock is set in your favour, you need to open the paddles because the up gate is soo leaky, just look!

The new centreflex with a twist, it now has a "get you home" adjustment if it breaks, cept it does
not do reverse when in emergency mode

Cleared the boat, switched on the land line to trickle the batteries, went to the car, put it in reverse and the car seemed a little odd. Never mind we headed out of Mercia, then we noticed rubber burning smell and loads smoke. Stopped and found that the off side spring had broken, embedding itself into the interior of the tyre wall hence the burning smell. I did not want the girls to wait too long so I dispatched the Missus and kids home, thanks to our neighbour driving to Willington to pick em up - cheers Angus. Now then, RAC called and they appeared about an hour later, car was put onto the ickle lifty thing and away we went to our garage.

And the cost for all of this, about £500! 250 for the coupling and 250 for the car, that's life but it is sometimes a bugger. ah well, the car could have gone whilst on the motorway so alls well that ends well - if not a little empty in the pocket area. So I need to be on me bike to work tomorrow so the missus can drive to work in my car whilst the other one is mended.

Now can anyone beat that for a weekend saga!

Watching the Welders

I had to collect the keys and pay for the external skin tank and blacking, so I popped down today and also took a few piccies. The boat in front is from willington and is having a new baseplate.

The marina is very small and navigating is an art, which i am getting much better at.
